At a Monday night ACT UP meeting in September 1989, it was brought to the floor that a gay man had been kicked out of the ER at St. Vincents Hospital by a security guard because he had dared to kiss his lover. A heated conversation ensued and eventually the whole room got up, walked around the corner to the hospital and took over the waiting room in the ER. As a result, the hospital agreed to meet with representatives of ACT UP.
Several ACT UP members met with the president of the hospital and the executive board, which resulted in sensitivity training for all of their employees.
